The Emperor’s Consort: The Peerless Doctor – Chapter 1

Chapter 1:  Rejecting Marriage

Gu Qian Cheng could not bring herself to believe what she just heard.  After all, who would believe that the bridegroom would suddenly refuse to marry her right on the wedding day?

However, the crumpled bridal veil that had been casted away and the discarded phoenix headgear told her otherwise.  She realized then that she had been put into the worst situation possible.

Gu Qian Cheng tried her best to douse the anger inside her heart.  She sneered, “Eldest Young Master Chu, was it you who spoke wrong or was it me who heard wrong?  You waited until now to tell me that you won’t marry me and instead wants to marry my sister?”

He wouldn’t marry her?  It wasn’t like she wanted to marry him either.  Had it not been for her leg injury and her feeble health, she wouldn’t have agreed to marry him on the first place.

“You did not hear me wrong.  I don’t want to marry you, I want to marry Gu Family’s 2nd Young Miss, Gu Qian Xue,” said the bridegroom, Qin Yun Chu, arrogantly.  He was the eldest son of King Zhao.

“Why?” asked Gu Qian Cheng directly.

Without even thinking, Qin Yun Chu replied her, “You’re asking me why?  Of course it’s because you are not good enough for me.”

“I’m not good enough for you, but Qian Xue is?  Did you forget something, shizi?  I am Gu Family’s eldest legitimate daughter.  I am your rightful fiancée,” a trace of anger flashed in Gu Qian Cheng’s eyes.

(TN:  Shizi refers to the Eldest Young Master of a family.)

It’s the day of the wedding and the bridegroom had forcibly taken off her headgear and said he wanted to marry her sister instead.  Just because she had no mother, these people really considered her as a grass to be trampled upon.

Qin Yun Chu, you had mistaken a nail for a grass.  I am not the old Gu Qian Cheng who was scared of her stepmother.  Since you want to embarrass me, I will return the favour tenfold.

He looked at her in disgust, “What fiancée?  I, Qin Yun Chu, refuse to acknowledge this.  So what if you’re the eldest legitimate daughter of Duke Gu?  Your noble background cannot make up for the fact that you are crippled!  I, this shizi, refuse to marry you!”

“You’re calling me crippled?  Is it because of my leg?  Chu shizi, do you remember why leg became like this?”  Gu Qian Cheng did not sound angry or sad, but her voice instead contained indescribable grievance.

She felt aggrieved for the original Gu Qian Cheng.  She became this way all thanks to Qin Yun Chu.  Had it not been for Qin Yun Chu, she wouldn’t have left the house before marriage, only to stumble upon the fifth prince who was being ambushed by assassins.  In the end, the original owner became disabled after she tried to save the fifth prince.  Afterwards, Qin Yun Chu and Gu Qian Xue pulled some strings behind the scene and in the end, Gu Qian Xue was the one who entered the palace to receive the rewards and got all the credits.

Everyone in the Gu Household knew about it, but they kept it quiet.  In the end, the original owner died in anger after repeated injustices.  She, on the other hand, just so happened to be reincarnated into this body.

Qin Yun Chu naturally knew everything was his fault, but in his opinion, he was free of blame because he already gave Gu Qian Cheng money to keep her quiet.

Instead of feeling guilty when Gu Qian Cheng brought it up, he got angry, “What has it got to do with this shizi?  You are crippled, stop yearning for things you don’t deserve.  Take off your wedding attire!  This shizi will not marry a disabled woman.  The King Zhao’s manor will never accept you!”

Had he not felt that it would only bring him more trouble, Qin Yun Zhu would have personally taken off her wedding dress long ago.

It didn’t matter how she got disabled; the fact remained that she was disabled and would never bring anything good to the imperial line.

Gu Qian Cheng knew that she was set to receive this humiliation today.  She ignored Qin Yun Chu and turned towards the pair who was sitting at the two most esteemed chairs.

“Father, Mother, do you agree with him?  Do you also think that I should take off this wedding dress and give it to my sister?” Her father was Duke Gu while her stepmother was the daughter of the Minister of Revenue.  They were sitting there, coldly watching her getting humiliated without saying any words of intervention.

Gu Qian Cheng was grateful she was not the former person she was.  Otherwise, she would have dropped dead from anger right then and there.

Not a single person from her family; be it her parents or the extended family members surrounding them, said a single word to support her.

Had it been any other girl, they would have thrown themselves at the nearest wall to take their own life, but this Gu Qian Cheng was not from the ancient times.

Someone who had died once was bound to fear death.  She still remembered the pain that she felt when the bullet penetrated her.

In this lifetime, she intended to stay well and alive for a very long time.
